Camper conversions, weight restrictions & speed limits: Everything you need to know about van safety

There are around 4.6 million vans on the UK’s roads, including 400,000 camper vans – many of which have been converted by the owners or local conversion companies. But how safe are they? And do they comply to UK rules and regulations?

From speed limits to weight limits, towing laws and licence rules, there are many different rules which apply to vans and could result in fines, penalty points or worse if you get it wrong.

That’s why Vision Zero South West has teamed up with the GCM YouTube channel to make a video specifically about van safety.

In this video we cover many key points, including:
• UK van speed limits (and why they’re different to cars)
• Weight limits, payload, and going overweight
• Van licence categories (including 3.5 tonne rules)
• Towing laws and trailer limits
• Load security and the risks of unsecured loads
• Van modifications and how they affect legality and insurance
• Roof racks, roof boxes, and carrying equipment safely
• DVLA rules and when you need to notify changes
