Driving Change for Safer Roads

The Vision Zero South West partnership has embarked on numerous innovative road safety projects over the years. These have included:

A study looking into the barriers and enablers of administering potentially life-saving TXA when administered to road traffic collision victims by professional bystanders
The UK’s first roll-out of freestanding AI cameras which detect seatbelt and mobile phone offences
A world-first trial of cameras which can spot potentially impaired drivers
The purchase of a Ford Focus RS Police car to promote road safety to younger drivers and car enthusiasts through the GCM YouTube channel
A pioneering operation called Op Cossett which uses drones to monitor road user behaviour on high harm routes
The UK’s first dedicated motorcycle road safety simulator
A behaviour change campaign aimed at motorcyclists fronted by biking legend Henry Cole

Motorcycle Simulator

Vision Zero South West has worked alongside the Department for Transport’s Project Apex, National Highways and Devon & Cornwall Police to pilot the development of a hazard awareness simulator – the first-of-its-kind in the UK.

Post-crash care is a key part of the Safe System approach, aimed at reducing deaths and serious injuries through rapid, effective, and equitable response after a collision.

Roads

Local councils and National Highways manage roads in Devon and Cornwall, with responsibilities guided by the Highways Act 1980 and Road Traffic Act 1988. Their work increasingly follows the Safe System approach.
