Welcome to the home of our state-of-the-art motorcycle road safety simulator.
Motorcyclists are one of the most vulnerable road user groups – both nationally and across Devon & Cornwall. Despite making up just 1% of total traffic, motorcyclists account for almost 20% of road deaths.
In response to this issue, Vision Zero South West has worked alongside the Department for Transport’s Project Apex, National Highways and Devon & Cornwall Police to develop a hazard awareness simulator – the first-of-its-kind in the UK.
With motorcycle-related collisions disproportionately affecting young riders (under 25), and with learner status and rider inexperience identified as road safety factors, Vision Zero South West is prioritising targeted early intervention approaches.
Our continued use of the motorcycle simulator within youth education programmes enables young people to experience realistic, risk-based scenarios in a safe environment – helping them develop hazard perception skills, understand the consequences of poor decision making, and build safer riding behaviours.
Uses a Honda CB500X with authentic controls (brakes, clutch, throttle, indicators) to replicate real-road conditions.
Surround video screens, realistic vibration, surround sound, and functioning wing mirrors create a lifelike riding experience.
Software allows for tailored hazard simulations, covering varied road layouts, weather, and traffic conditions.
Real-time analysis and rider feedback provided by experienced operators, including police motorbike instructors.
Touring events and venues across Devon & Cornwall throughout 2024 to evaluate impact on rider hazard awareness.
